Teaching Ideas and Resources:

English

  • Make a list of all of the rhyming words in the story.
  • Count how many syllables can be found in different lines in the story. Is there a pattern?
  • How many connectives can you find in the story? Can you try to change some of them? Does this improve the text or not?
  • Compare the book with the animated and movie versions. Which do you prefer?

  • Retell the story from the fish's point of view.
  • Write a prequel to the story that explains where the Cat in the Hat came from.
  • Write a sequel to this story. What does the Cat in the Hat do next?
  • Write a new story about the Things.
  • Think of the arguments for and against telling mother about what happened that day.
  • Rewrite the story (or part of it) in the form of a playscript, using the speech to help you. Could you perform your playscript?
  • Think of some questions that you might ask the Cat in the Hat if you met him. How might he respond?
  • Write a new story about a different cat in a hat.
  • Find out more about the author, Dr. Seuss by exploring his official site. If you could interview him, what would you say to him?
  • Watch different readings of the story (or listen to the audiobook). Could you record your own version?

Maths

  • The Cat in the Hat balances lots of objects while he is hopping on a ball. How much might each of these things weigh? What is the total weight?

Science

  • The Things like to fly kites. Can you explain how kites work? Could you make / fly some of your own?

Computing

  • Use a painting program to create a picture of the Cat in the Hat.
  • Design a new hat using the template provided (see Resources below).
  • Make an interactive story that is based on the book.
  • Design a game in which the children have to catch the Things.
  • Make a presentation that advertises the book to children who have not read it yet.

Design Technology

  • Design a game that Sally and her brother could play on other cold and wet days.
  • Design your own game called 'Fun in a Box'. What might be inside the box? How would the game be played? Can you create the game and write a set of instructions?
  • Design a new machine that will clear up mess, like the one in the story. How will it work? What materials could it be made from?
  • Could you create a model / toy version of the Cat in the Hat?

Art

  • Look at the use of colour in the illustrations. How many colours are used? Can you create your own illustrations that only use a few colours?
  • Try to recreate some of the illustrations with a wider range of colours. Are the pictures better with more colours in them?
  • Design a new hat for the Cat in the Hat (see Resources below).
  • Create a storyboard / comic strip that retells the main events of the story.
  • Look at the use of motion lines in the illustrations. Can you draw your own pictures that show motion using this technique?
  • Look at this wonderful Cat in the Hat display and try to make your own!
